Dedicated-compute virtual servers

A BigBlueButton VPS without bargain-cloud compromises

Start with the flexibility of a VPS while reserving CPU resources for the media workload. Every production tier meets or exceeds the official baseline of 8 CPU cores and 16 GB RAM.

01

Why dedicated CPU matters

WebRTC workloads are sensitive to CPU contention. Dedicated-compute plans reduce interference from neighbouring virtual machines and make performance easier to reason about during concurrent classes.

02

Storage sized for recordings

The entry tier includes 500 GB NVMe, matching the current official production storage baseline when recording is enabled. External recording tiers are available when retention needs outgrow local storage.

03

A clean deployment target

BigBlueButton expects a clean, dedicated Ubuntu host with the required TCP and UDP ports available. These VPS plans are supplied for that single-purpose role rather than bundled with a web hosting control panel.

The operational reality

BigBlueButton capacity depends on how people use media. Hardware specifications help narrow the choice, but your own load test, monitoring and failure plan turn that choice into a production design.

Questions answered

What teams ask before ordering

Can BigBlueButton run on a VPS?+

Yes, provided the virtualisation environment and allocated resources meet the requirements. The official project recommends compute-intensive instances with dedicated CPU for cloud VMs.

Should Greenlight use the same VPS?+

It can for smaller deployments. Isolating Greenlight and its data services becomes useful when scaling to several media nodes.

Can I upgrade to bare metal?+

Yes. Order the target server and select migration assistance if you want engineering time reserved for the move.
